Mailchimp is used by businesses to manage email marketing and other sales activities in a streamlined and efficient way.¹
If you’re thinking of using the Mailchimp Ireland service for your business, you’ll want to compare the Mailchimp pricing options available, which include a limited Mailchimp free plan and various other account tiers to get more from the service.
This guide covers the costs of using Mailchimp for business, and also touches on how to use Wise Business and the Wise Business card to pay your SaaS subscriptions in different currencies with low costs.
Mailchimp costs depend on the plan you select. You can choose the plan which best suits your needs from the Mailchimp price list², depending on the specific services your business would benefit from.
In Ireland, Mailchimp primarily promotes the Standard and Premium plans but there’s also the Essentials plan, and the Free option which is fairly limited in scope.

Mailchimp has 4 different account tiers for customers in Ireland. You can choose the free plan, but this does have quite limited scope.
Free account users can still send up to 1,000 emails a month, but only one user and audience is allowed. Free plan users may find their outgoing Mailchimp emails also have Mailchimp branding on them, rather than being fully customisable by the business.
All accounts also have access to the Mailchimp mobile app to allow you to manage your account on the move. However, subscribers on the free plan only get email support for 30 days on signing up, and have limited access to features including audience management tools and marketing channels.
Once you start to upgrade from the free plan, you’ll find that there are more features, and more flexibility in the way you can use your account. You’ll be able to add on additional users, access more audiences, get more advanced analytical and testing tools, and get SMS marketing services for example.
Each Mailchimp account plan has quite a varied range of features, so to decide which is best you’ll need to compare the options carefully based on how you’d anticipate using your account.
The right Mailchimp account plan for your business will depend on how you’re likely to use it and the specific features you need. The good news is that there are often free trial periods available on some popular plans, which gives you a chance to try them out for around 14 days before you commit to spending money on them.
At the time of research, you could choose to take on either the Mailchimp Standard or Essentials plan for free on a 14 day trial, or get a discount on other plans if you sign up for a year long contract.
These promotional offers do change from time to time, but it’s well worth looking out to see what’s available when you sign up.
If you’re unsure what plan may work for you, you can also choose the free plan - but it’s important to be aware that the functions are fairly limited, and so you may not get the best experience of using the service this way.
Mailchimp advertises its pricing according to the country you reside in. That means that in Ireland, the pricing is advertised in Euros. However, as Mailchimp is a US business, the underlying currency they charge in is USD.
To pay your bill, the USD value of your monthly bill is converted using an exchange rate supplied by Chase Paymentech.³ This can vary month by month, depending on the fluctuations in foreign exchange markets. The amount you pay may include additional fees which are added onto the exchange rate used for conversion.
You can see the Mailchimp costs on the billing page within your account.
Mailchimp accepts all major credit and debit cards, PayPal, SEPA Direct Debit, and iDEAL.
Marketing your business is crucial - but you don’t want to spend more than you need to while doing so. Here are a few hints for keeping down the costs of using Mailchimp:
- Use any free trial that is available when you sign up - this could give you 2 weeks to test out a plan and decide if it’s right for you
- Compare plans carefully to make sure you’re not paying for services you don’t need
- Audit your Mailchimp use frequently - if you’re paying for advanced features and they’re not used, you’re spending money unnecessarily
- If you’re paying across currencies, make sure your card doesn’t add foreign transaction fees - and if you choose to pay with a credit card watch out for card fees there too.
Mailchimp Ireland users will pay their subscription fees in euros, with currency conversion controlled by Mailchimp’s partner. Make paying your ongoing bills in EUR - and any other currency you need - simple by using Wise Business and the Wise Business card.
Wise lets you hold 40+ currencies in the same account, and receive payments to your account in 8+ currencies using local details. This makes it easy to connect with customers overseas.
Hold your balance in a foreign currency, or convert to EUR with the mid-market rate and low, transparent fees, to pay for SaaS subscriptions with your card.
If you find you need to make business payments in foreign currencies, use the Wise card and there’s no foreign transaction fee to pay. Just add money to Wise in euros, and convert to the currency you need using the mid-market rate and low conversion fees. It’s then free to spend a currency you hold in your account, making it simple and efficient to cover your foreign currency spending.

Unlike Mailchimp there’s no Activecampaign free plan - fees kick in right away. However, the features are also quite different, which may still make Activecampaign an attractive option, depending on your business needs.
You’ll need to compare both on features as well as fees, to see whether one is a real stand out winner for your business. To give an overview, here’s a reminder of the Mailchimp plan pricing:
