If you’re an Irish citizen currently in London you can renew your passport online. If it’s an emergency then Irish residents of Great Britain or Northern Ireland can also do it at the Irish Visa & Passport office in London.

Irish passports can be renewed online using the Passport Online service from anywhere worldwide, including London.⁴ It can be done as early as 12 months before the passport is due to expire.

To renew an Irish passport online you need to go to the website Passport Online and follow the prompts to fill in the application.⁴

Before you start the application make sure you have these things on hand:

  • An acceptable digital photo
  • Credit or debit card to pay the fee
  • Email address to receive updates and confirmation
  • Your current passport.

Steps to renew a passport in person in London

To renew your Irish passport at the Irish Visa & Passport Office in London, you have to follow these steps.

Step 1: Make an appointment

Make an appointment online up to three weeks in advance and pay the relevant fee.

Step 2: Gather your documents

Complete a paper copy of form APS2E for Irish residents of Northern Ireland or Great Britain. Get 4 passport approved photos taken and printed. Both of these then need to be witnessed by an acceptable witness before the appointment.

Step 3: Attend your appointment

Bring your documents to the scheduled appointment for review and processing. Make sure you arrive on time because your renewal application won’t be processed if you’re late.

How long it takes to renew your Irish passport depends on the renewal method and type of application.

An urgent Irish passport renewal at the London Visa & Passport Office has five day turnaround.¹

The average turnaround times for Passport Online starts from the date the Passport Service receives all supporting documentation³:

  • Adult Renewal (Complex): 15 working days
  • Child Renewal: 15 working days

Keep in mind this is just the processing time and doesn’t include the time it takes for the passport to arrive in the post.
