Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a pioneer of IT lifecycle management solutions that reduce the total cost of owning IT resources, today announced it is working closely with Microsoft to help automate management of the recently announced Microsoft Windows Embedded for Point of Service software. Altiris® IT lifecycle management solutions will help reduce the cost and time needed to deploy, service and support secure and reliable retail point of service (POS) systems.

Altiris solutions will help retailers reduce the cost and complexity of setting up and using reliable point of service systems by automating and simplifying tedious management tasks like OS deployment, patch management and asset management. Leveraging management automation of POS systems enables more rapid development and integration of reliable systems, applications and device peripherals such as scanners, receipt printers, cash drawers and magnetic stripe readers.

Dwain Kinghorn, Altiris CTO, said, “Windows Embedded for Point of Service managed by Altiris IT lifecycle management solutions promotes flexible and secure retail systems that are easily integrated and maintained. As an early adopter of new Microsoft technology, Altiris continues to work with Microsoft to provide IT lifecycle management solutions for the latest Windows operating systems to help customers reduce costs.”

Microsoft Corp. spokesperson Jane Gilson, group product manager of the Mobile and Embedded Devices Division, said, “Windows Embedded for Point of Service is designed to provide the retail and hospitality industry with a manageable platform that enhances the customer experience while increasing the productivity of in-store and IT personnel. Third-party solution providers like Altiris will offer our mutual customers flexible options to streamline the management of their POS devices.”

Windows Embedded for Point of Service, based on technologies available in Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 2, is optimized for retailers to enhance the customer experience at the point of service, increase reliability and security, and deliver low life-cycle costs for point-of -service systems. Windows Embedded for Point of Service is expected to be available in the first half of 2005.
